Schade, Ray and Zavala Named CHS Athletes of the Week

Hazel Schade & Lucy Ray (Seniors – Tennis)

Schade and Ray capped off their CHS tennis careers this past weekend at the 1A State Tournament at the Yakima Tennis Club, leaving a lasting legacy on the court.

As the Bulldogs’ number-one doubles team for the past two seasons, the senior duo anchored a historic spring for the girls’ tennis program. Together, they drove the team to both a SCAC league title and a District 5 team title. They also claimed the top spot on the podium themselves, winning the girls’ doubles division at the District Tournament with a thrilling victory over Omak. Schade and Ray finished their spectacular senior campaign with an outstanding 19-2 record, wrapping things up with a hard-fought 1-2 showing against the top competition in the state.

Head Coach Tasha Key: “Lucy and Hazel have had a tremendous senior year. This year they went 19-2, showing impressive improvements throughout the entire season. They had a great run at districts, beating Omak to finish first. They also had a great run in the state tournament playing some tough teams; they battled hard, and I am proud of their effort and positive attitudes throughout the entire tournament. They have both stepped up for the team, being leaders on and off the court. Lucy and Hazel have been so fun to coach all season. I am so proud of their hard work and commitment to the team, and they will both be missed next year.”

Isaac Zavala (Senior – Track & Field)

Zavala is putting the finishing touches on an outstanding four-year career with the track and field program. Fresh off being named the SCAC Boys Track Player of the Year, Zavala put on a clinic at this past Friday’s District 5 Meet, punching his ticket to the State Championships in four different events: the 100M dash, 200M dash, 4×100 relay, and 4×400 relay.

Zavala took home individual gold in the 200M, clocking a personal record (PR) of 22.64 seconds to become the District Champion. He then shifted into anchor mode for the relays, running a 50.2-second split to secure a District Championship in the 4×400 by over 1.5 seconds. He also anchored the 4×100 squad to a victory that didn’t just break the District Meet record—it shattered the school record, too.

Head Coach Jeff Kenoyer: “Isaac had a great District 5 track meet. He qualified for the state meet in the 100 dash, 200 dash, 4×100 relay, and the 4×400 relay. His time in the 200 was a personal record (22.64) and made him the District Champion. He was the anchor leg on both relays, with the 4×100 relay setting a District Record and also a School Record. His split of 50.2 helped the 4×400 relay team to a District Championship by over 1.5 seconds! Isaac is ready for a great state meet.”
