The Cashmere Bulldogs boys wrestling team opened postseason competition Wednesday at Wapato High School, competing in the first day of the District 5 Tournament.
Day one included the first two championship rounds along with the first two consolation rounds. The tournament will resume Saturday, February 14, at 11:00 a.m. at Connell High School, where district champions and state qualifiers will be determined. The top seven finishers in each weight class will advance to the 1A state tournament, scheduled for February 20–21 at the Tacoma Dome.
Most Bulldog wrestlers competed in just one match on Wednesday, with many turning in strong opening performances. Tony Rodriguez (106) highlighted the day with a technical fall victory in his first-round match. Zavien Eaves (126), Zane Pace (132), Marshall Pell (132), Kaiden Huber (138), Kenyon Shabazz (138), Kolton Weeks (144), Rafael Rojas (150), Andrew Ratliff (157), and Zennon Cortes (175) all went 1–0, giving Cashmere a solid start as they look to build momentum heading into Saturday’s finals.
Several of the Bulldogs’ top-ranked wrestlers received double byes and did not compete on Wednesday. Those wrestlers included Mack Pell (126), Jance Novak (165), Jacoby Tait (190), Grey Jacobson (190), Ulysses Betancourt (285), and Lizandro Sanchez (285).
With multiple wrestlers still undefeated and several top contenders set to begin competition, the Bulldogs will return to the mat Saturday aiming to secure district titles and qualify as many wrestlers as possible for the state tournament.
