The Cashmere Bulldogs girls basketball team faced a tall task Saturday night, traveling to take on the top-ranked Zillah Leopards in the District Tournament semifinals. Zillah, ranked No. 1 in the state with a 21-2 record and an undefeated run through SCAC play, proved why they hold the top spot, defeating the Bulldogs 74-29.
Despite the final score, Cashmere came out strong and confident. The Bulldogs controlled much of the first quarter and competed evenly with the Leopards early on. After an intense opening period, Cashmere trailed just 9-7 heading into the second quarter.
Zillah began to create separation in the second period, but the Bulldogs kept things within reach. The Leopards did not lead by more than 10 points throughout most of the first half. However, momentum swung sharply just before halftime when Zillah sharpshooter Bella Valadez drilled a corner three-pointer at the buzzer, sending the Leopards into the break with a 27-14 advantage.
Zillah’s high-powered offense found another gear in the third quarter. The Leopards knocked down three shots from beyond the arc and outscored Cashmere 27-9 in the frame, stretching the lead beyond reach. Zillah continued to build on its advantage in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 18-6 to seal the semifinal win.
Cashmere was led by junior Addie Talley, who finished with a team-high 10 points while pulling down eight rebounds and collecting two steals. Freshman Addi Lyons added six points and nine rebounds, providing a strong presence on the boards. Junior Gwen Ledesma chipped in five points and three steals, while senior Alyssa Soria contributed three points and three rebounds.
Freshman Logan Hatmaker gave the Bulldogs quality minutes off the bench, knocking down a three-pointer and grabbing two rebounds. Sophomore Juliana Boyd added two points and dished out a team-high three assists.
The Bulldogs now turn their attention to a loser-out playoff game Tuesday night, when they will host the Naches Valley Rangers. Cashmere has defeated the Rangers twice this season, including a narrow 25-23 victory in their most recent matchup on Naches Valley’s home court.
Tuesday’s playoff game will tip off at 5:30 p.m. at Cashmere High School. The Cashmere boys team will follow at 7:00 p.m. against Wapato as postseason action continues.
