Athlete of the Week: Grey Jacobson, Jr. – Defensive End
In one of the most dominant defensive performances of the Washington high school football season, junior defensive end Grey Jacobson powered the Bulldogs to a 59–16 state quarterfinal victory over Life Christian on Saturday. Jacobson was nearly unblockable, racking up 10 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and 8 tackles for loss, overwhelming the Eagles’ backfield snap after snap.
The breakout game adds to a stellar junior campaign that has firmly placed Jacobson among the state’s elite defenders. Through the quarterfinal round, he has totaled 66 tackles, 16 sacks, and 27 tackles for loss, anchoring a defense that has helped carry the Bulldogs deep into the postseason.
Head coach Bryan Bremer says that while Jacobson’s quarterfinal stat line turned heads statewide, the path to that moment is what makes his story special.
“Grey found himself in the spotlight after an outstanding quarterfinal performance. What many may not realize, however, is the journey that led him to that moment,” Bremer said. “Late in his sophomore season, our coaching staff made the decision to transition Grey from linebacker to defensive end — a move that came with uncertainty but tremendous potential.
Adding to the uncertainty, early in spring ball this past June, Grey suffered a broken collarbone in practice. This setback might have discouraged many athletes. Yet, Grey’s resilience, work ethic, and determination never wavered. He attacked his recovery and development with the same intensity he brings to the field every day.
Through perseverance and commitment, Grey has developed into one of the premier defensive linemen in the state, and his dominant performance on Saturday was a testament to that growth. Our program is better because of Grey’s willingness to trust the process and embrace his new role. The greatest compliment I can give Grey is this: I’m incredibly thankful he’s a Bulldog… because I would hate to have to game plan against him.”
Jacobson’s emergence has been vital to the Bulldogs’ playoff surge. With confidence high and momentum on their side, the junior standout will once again be a key figure as the team continues its pursuit of a state championship.
